We left Gander and headed north on the Gander Bay Road. Our intention was to snow shoe down the 30 minute trail to First Pond Bar on the Gander River. The snow shoeing was too difficult with deep soft snow. We proceeded further north on GBR and headed for the river on a trail compacted by a skidoo. The trail headed towards the river and then turned south to parallel the river. We never did see the river but judging the topography, we were close. After an hour trek, we stopped for lunch in a stand of spruce where this snap was taken. The 27 mile long Gander River flows north from the north western end of Gander Lake to the sea at Sir Charles Hamilton Sound near Gander Bay. Hamilton was Governor of Newfoundland from 1818-1824. When he got to St. John's, he found the Government House to be terribly run down. He complained to the British Government and they agreed to fund a new one which was constructed during his successor, Governor Thomas Cochrane's, administration. That's the house that John Crosbie a few days ago took up residence as the new lieutenant-governor. They say when Sir Leonard Outerbridge was lieutenant-governor from 1949 to1957, it was his practice to visit the Waterford Hospital around Christmas time. He was talking to a patient who was about to be released after a stay of 7 years, finally cured, waiting for his brother to come pick him up. Sir Leonard, asked him a few questions and then asked the patient if he knew who he was speaking to and the guy said "no". Sir Leonard said that he was Sir Leonard Outerbridge, lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and the patient said, "you'll get over that, when I came here 7 years ago, I was King George V".
